Mission Impact Celebration

A year ago we all experienced the impact a category 4 hurricane makes in a community. Augusta had never been in a hurricane before—I had never lived through a hurricane—and that experience had a much greater impact on us than a mere description of a hurricane could ever have. We saw and felt devastation first-hand, and we also saw ourselves rise up in sacrificial ways to meet the needs. We were astounded at both the harm and the help around us.

For over a year I’ve been hearing the stories of our church’s mission work. I’ve been surprised and moved at how much the members of our church are doing, and I think you’d be surprised too. I’ve also been learning more and more about the needs of our community and other parts of the world, and unless you’re regularly seeing those needs face-to-face, I think you’d be surprised to learn about the depth of that need.

Our upcoming Mission Impact Celebration, November 7-9, will tell us some of the stories of the need as well as some of the ways our church family can help meet those needs. A number of special guests will tell their stories.

  • We’ll hear about a new organization that is supporting young adults who are aging out of foster care, who usually have little or no family support for living their lives.
  • We’ll hear about a medical clinic that demonstrates Christ’s love by providing affordable, quality primary healthcare to the underserved.
  • We’ll hear about people who provide mobile showers and support connections for homeless and under-housed people in Augusta.
  • We’ll hear about a ministry that serves orphaned and vulnerable children in Honduras.
  • We’ll hear about a ministry that provides safe and loving support for pregnant women in crisis
  • We’ll learn about the work being done by our church’s ongoing mission action ministries and other groups.

We’ll hear a vision for missions in our church, and we’ll hear ways we can better focus our help. And that’s just part of what we’ll learn. When you hear these stories, I believe you’ll be surprised. I believe you’ll be moved. I believe you’ll want to know how you can help with hands-on work, with financial support, and with prayer. We will all be challenged to find what God is calling us to do.

This event will be a CELEBRATION of what God is doing around us, of what our church has been doing in missions, and of the resources we bring—individually and as a congregation–to the good work God is calling us to.

  • Friday evening, November 7, we’ll have a Celebration Dinner and hear some stories from guests and friends.
  • Saturday morning, November 8, we’ll see and hear more stories.
  • Sunday morning, November 9, will be Challenge & Commitment Sunday in both the 8:45 and 11:00 worship services. By then we will have had a weekend of opportunity for God’s Spirit to speak to us, and this will be the time for us to respond to God’s call, individually and together as the Body of Christ.

Mission. Impact. Celebration.

The experience of this weekend will have a much greater impact on us than a mere description can have. Make your plans to be there. Be watching for more details coming soon.
