Dear Church,

As many of you are already aware, David Hughes has recently been called as the new Senior Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Carrollton, Georgia. While we are incredibly sad to see David, Rebecca, and Maggie leave our community, we celebrate the amazing work they have done in their almost four years at FBC Augusta. While the mechanisms and processes of calling a new Minister to Youth have already begun turning, today I simply want to take a moment to say “thank you” to David and the entire Hughes family for all they have meant to our church and also to me personally. I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things that begin to happen in Carrollton!

I have asked David to write a brief letter that I would love to share with you in this edition of the digital Interpreter.

Grace and Peace,

Dear First Baptist of Augusta:

Nearly four years ago this beautiful church called my family and me to come and serve in the capacity of minister of students.  Since then, I have had the distinct privilege of shepherding our youth, college students, and adult leaders as we have followed Jesus together.  I have made memories and friendships which I will never forget.  The blessing of your kindness and support has been amazing.  It is no surprise that in such a wonderful place as this, my family flourished and my love for Christ and His Church continued to grow in significant ways!

This past Sunday, November 14th I preached a sermon in light of a call at First Baptist Church Carrollton.  At the conclusion of the service, the church voted me as their next senior pastor.  Their vote, along with the church’s loving reception to my family, allows me to say confidently that God is calling us into this role in a new city.  While we are filled with hope and excitement for what this next chapter will mean, we are also sad that we will be saying goodbye to people like you who have loved us so well.  You have epitomized encouragement, grace, and love.  We cannot thank you enough.

Looking ahead, our last Sunday at First Baptist Church of Augusta will be Sunday, December 12th, and we will be moving to Carrollton in the New Year.  While the conclusion of my time as your minister to students quickly approaches, I will remain forever your friend and brother in Christ.  My prayer is that God will continue to bless the amazing work that is happening here as this church remains a source of resurrection hope.

Lastly for the students of First Baptist Church of Augusta, I thank God for each of you.  Being your youth pastor has been a gift from above.  I will continue to believe and anticipate the “Immeasurably More” that is within each of you and will be cheering you on as it all unfolds!  Always remain steadfast in your pursuit of Christ Jesus, for the best is yet to come!

David, Rebecca, and Maggie Hughes
