The Turn (College Outreach Ministry)

The Turn Overview and Mission

The Turn is the college outreach of Fellowship Bible Church on the campus of ASU where we call college adults from wherever they are to come and follow Christ in the context of the local church.

The Turn’s Vision

Our heartbeat for the campus is summed up in two bold claims.

  • The gospel is the most relevant message for college adults, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey.
  • The local church is the best place in the city for college adults, no matter what their past experience with the church has been.

Our culture is filled with distorted opinions of “Jesus and the gospel” and the “church.” College is the time for many to abandon the pursuit of both because college adults perceive one or both are irrelevant or unnecessary. Through The Turn, we invite college adults to journey together with us as we see if the gospel and the local church are all we’ve cracked them up to be.

The Role of The Turn In The Mission of Fellowship

The Turn is more than “the college ministry” of Fellowship Bible Church. Rather, The Turn represents a key component of our strategy to reach our city, region and world with the good news of the gospel. Most of the college adults attending ASU come from the city of Jonesboro and surrounding cities and towns. Therefore, if we can be used by God to capture the hearts of these college adults for Jesus, His church, and His mission for the church, we then send them back to their cities and towns as followers of Jesus—better equipped to love and serve Jesus in the context of the local church in their area. Likewise, our great hope and prayer is that through our ministry, God would call several students to plant life-giving, Christ-exalting, missional churches in their hometown—staying around after graduation for training by Fellowship so that we might send them out as partners and church plants in their city. Similarly, where population density may not support or require an additional church plant, Fellowship’s desire is to move towards a multi-campus approach and plant campuses in smaller towns, under the leadership of Fellowship’s elder board and the direct oversight of a campus pastor who very well could be a college adult that came through the ministry of The Turn.
Our desire to join God in spreading the good news of the gospel to every tribe, tongue and nation also involves The Turn in a critical capacity. ASU has recently begun the aggressive recruitment of International students to attend ASU, bringing the nations to our doorstep in Jonesboro, AR. Much of our efforts at The Turn have been to warmly embrace international students from closed or difficult countries such as China, Sri Lanka, as well as Turkey, India and more here at ASU (currently up from approx 150 Internationals to over 700 for Fall of 2009). Again, our goal is to be used by God to bring the gospel to these students, see them come to faith in Jesus, fall in love with His church and the church’s mission to reach the world and then join us in three ways:

  • Return back to their country as a follower of Jesus committed to sharing the gospel in the context of a local church;
  • Sense God’s call on their lives to return to their country and plant a church, therefore staying here after graduation to receive training and be sent out by Fellowship (hopefully with other college adults and families who were integral in their conversion);
  • Stay here in Jonesboro after graduation to help us reach international students from their country at ASU.

Getting Connected with The Turn

The easiest way to get connected with The Turn is to join our online community called “The City.” On The City, we’ll communicate with college adults, make announcements, share prayer requests, schedule events and more. Plus there are lots of other benefits to joining The City, like finding a place to serve, church-wide announcements and events, outreach opportunities and so much more.
